European Parliament condemns death of Zapata and support Cuban civil society

The European Parliament (EP) on Thursday condemned the human rights situation in Cuba after the death of opposition Orlando Zapata Tamayo, a majority of 509 votes for and 30 against.

The EP also called on the Cuban regime to “immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners and of conscience”. Furthermore, the EP expressed its concern over “the alarming state that is the psychologist and journalist Guillermo Farinas”.

The resolution calls on the European diplomat, Catherine Ashton as the European Commission, "immediately initiate a structured dialogue with Cuban civil society and with those sectors that support a peaceful transition in the island".
